Where was it built?

Whoever wrote that the Audi 50 was produced at Wolfsburg had a good source for the information. However, someone else pointed out that it was built at Neckarsulm, because his mother worked at the plant at the time. I strongly suspect it was built (maybe at at different times) in both locations.

I never worked for Audi, but I did as a tourist get a factory tour of the Neckarsulm plant in September 1972. (Tourists were not permitted to tour the Ro80 plant even though my father was driving a Ro80 at that time.) They were certainly assembling Audi 80s (B1) at Neckarsulm in September 1972. BUT I remember reading in the press that they ALSO built the Audi 80 at Wolfsburg, as a device for accustoming the plant to Passat production (the two cars being very similar, just like the Audi 50 / VW Polo). There is also a picture in German wikipedia which is stated to be of Audi 80s being assembled at Wolfsburg.

SO for BOTH models, the evidence (sourced for Wolfsburg, but based on reliable memory for Neckarsulm) is that they were built at Neckarsulm AND at Wolfsburg (which was suddenly finding itself short of Kaefer Kunden).

Any thoughts / agreement / disagreement before I change the text again?

There was no Audi 50 manufactured in Wolsburg. The Audi model was completely manufactured in Neckarsulm at its first time because the Volswagen plant hadn't the necessary capacity to built this new car model. This was the reason why it was built in Neckarsulm. But one thing is definetely also, the car model was engineered by the Volkwagenwerk GmbH as a VW model. Audi AG and Kolbenschmidt are one of the largest employers in my area. To see where I live show the article about Elztal. The plant is only 30 km far away from my home. And I am very often in Neckarsulm because my father is working next door to the Audi AG at the Kolbenschmidt factory. My mother was working at the Audi NSU Auto Union AG from 1967 up to 1976. Manufactured models in the Neckarsulm plant where at this time: NSU Prinz 4, NSU Prinz 1000, NSU TT/TTS, NSU Ro 80, Audi 100, Audi 200 and the Audi 50. --TheAutoJunkie (talk) 17:58, 2 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This is all very interesting, but Wikipedia does not publish original research. If you want Wikipedia to say the Audi 50 was built in Neckarsulm and not Wolfsburg, then you need to cite a reliable source. And then we need to explain why Audi's own publications ([1], and also the official Audi book, A History of Progress, 3rd edition, 2001) says it was made in Wolfsburg. What engines did it actually have, then?

The sidebar says 0.9, 1.1 and 1.3L ... the body text says just a 1.1 with two different states of tune. Furthermore the VW Polo Mk1 article suggests it had a 1.05 as later found on the Polo itself... 193.63.174.211 (talk) 13:34, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A quick Google finds these pages; they state that the 1093cc engine was standard (in either 50 or 60 bhp states of tune, for the LS and GL/GLS respectively), but that the GLS was given a 60 bhp 1272cc engine for 1977-78 only. Since 1996, the company decided to relaunch this segment under the Audi A3 8L brand, during a period of marketing evolution when the Audi 80 was renamed Audi A4 (B5) in 1994, then the Audi 100 was named Audi A6 (C4) in 1994. 178.205.126.122 (talk) 20:55, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
